HORNETS BATTLE IN FINAL GAME FOR STATE AAAA TITLE (2003)
Your South Atlanta Hornets took on the Griffin Bears in a winner-take-all contest for the State AAAA crown Friday, March 7th at Georgia Tech's Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

In front of state television coverage and national webcast by Georgia Public Television, the Hornets took an early lead and dominated the first half... Unfortunately, foul trouble on 6'7" senior, defensive specialist, Slyvania Watkins and cold perimeter shooting, caused the Hornets to stumble in the 4th quarter -- falling one game short of the State AAAA championship.

Senior All-Star, Vincent Banks, exhausted himself in a great game with a valiant attempt to carry the load for the Hornets - scoring a team-high 32 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

CONGRATULATIONS HORNETS ON ANOTHER GREAT SEASON!!!

Hornets Bow Out in Second-round Controversy

(left) Before his early 1st quarter ejection, starting center Sylvania Watkins scores over Cedar Shoals' "overly dramatic" Quentin Moses.

(right) Vincent Banks is comforted by Coach Reddick after he became the fifth Hornet to foul out of the playoff game. Banks scored 29 points inspite of injury. But it was not enough to compensate for the loss of Watkins.

South Atlanta's brilliant season came to an end 93 - 76 in the "Sweet Sixteen" of the State Playoffs, after starting center Sylvania Watkins was ejected five minutes into the second-round State Playoff game against Cedar Shoals for allegedly throwing a retaliatory punch after receiving a hard elbow from Cedar Shoals' Quentin Moses.

Cedar Shoals was awarded 57 free throws and the Hornets were severely hampered as five players fouled out, including the team's leading scorer, Vincent Banks, who registered 29 points in a valiant attempt to carry the load.

The 2001 South Atlanta Hornets and their 26 - 3 season, was one of the best in school history. Onward and upward next season!
